Brisbane-based trainer Kelly Schweida has been pleased with the progression made by Miss Cover Girl through recent starts and is confident his stable star is up to the class of Saturday’s featured 2016 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse.
Miss Cover Girl has been a strong and largely consistent performer for Schweida since first appearing on course competitively in 2014; posting a commendable seven wins and six minors through only twenty one career starts to date.
A proven performer in Sydney having taken out the Group 3 PJ Bell Stakes (1200m) at Royal Randwick on Day 1 of The Championships last year, Schweida told AAP he is confident the Monashee Mountain mare is primed for another successful hit-and-run mission in the 2016 Breeders’ Classic on Saturday.
“If you have horses you think can win then I like to bring them to Sydney and I guess I’ve got a good strike rate,” Schweida said.
“It looks like a strong race with a couple of good mares in it but I was pretty happy with Miss Cover Girl’s last-start third under 59 kilos.
“And if it happens to be wet, we know she can handle it.”
Winning each of her first four competitive starts upon debuting in 2014, Miss Cover Girl impressively finished outside the first three only once in eight starts through her debut campaign.
Resuming last year for success in the IPG Connect BM85 (1200m) in late February, Miss Cover Girl ran fifth in a Gold Coast minor over 1400m in her only other start prior to the PJ Bell Stakes; progressing to fifth in the Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1200m) and second in the Group 3 Fred Best Classic (1350m) and returned to the paddock after placing fifth in the Group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m).
Placing third in each of a Doomben sprint over 1050m and Group 3 The Nivison (1200m) at Randwick upon resuming in spring, Miss Cover Girl finished eighth in the Magic Millions F&M Quality (1300m) on January 9th before placing third in the Listed Nudgee Quality (1200m) on January 23rd.
