Catkins Successfully Defends Crown in 2015 Breeders’ Classic

February 9th, 2015

Talented mare Catkins has returned to racing in the best way possible in 2015; successfully defending her title in the Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens over the weekend.

Jumping from the gates well, Catkins immediately pressed forward down the outside of the field of nine; setting a good pace away from the barriers and settling on the heels of the race’s early leaders.

Finding a typically good rhythm rounding the bend and onto the final straight, the Dubawi mare charged forward and locked in a fierce sprint battle with the David Payne-trained Lilliburlero; kicking well in the final 100m to hit the line a short head in the clear; Mihiri running on for third.

Confirming the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) on Day 2 of The Championships will figure as her major target over autumn, Waller was thrilled with Catkins’ performance in the 2015 Breeders’ Classic and is confident of further success this time in.

“She rarely runs a bad race,” Waller said.

“Her record shows that and she is lightly raced for a six-year-old so hopefully there is a lot more left for her.”

“I think we broke her heart in the Coolmore last year when she carried 58 kilos and we won’t make the same mistake again.

“Group One wins are so important and the Queen of the Turf is the target.

“She is a foolproof horse and even though she had to fight hard today, she looked like she enjoyed it.”

Having now secured a commendable race record of 13 wins and a further ten minor places from her 28 competitive appearances on course so far, Catkins progressed to success in the Group 3 Wiggle Stakes (1400m) following her 2014 Breeders’ Classic victory; running third in the Coolmore Classic and taking out the Group 2 Emancipation Stakes (1500m) before a disappointing performance for sixth in the Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Yet to be confirmed for a specific path to and beyond the Queen Of The Turf Stakes this year, a trip to Queensland for the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara (1400m) may figure for Catkins should form warrant a berth.
