Securing several impressive results over the 2014 Australian racing calendar, trainer David Payne is thrilled with the condition of classy mare Lilliburlero and is confident of a successful return in Saturday’s featured Group 2 Breeders’ Classic (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens.
Claiming four wins and as many minor places from her 19 competitive appearances on course so far, Lilliburlero has not been seen at the races since placing a credible fifth in the Listed Starlight Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill on November 29th.
Having reportedly taken well to her time in the paddock and subsequent return to work, Payne told AAP he cannot fault the overall ability of Lilliburlero, but concedes she sometimes finds a way to lose.
“She’s a filly that costs herself races,” Payne said.
“She always seems to be a bit slow out and then strikes interference.”
Yet to be confirmed for a specific path past the 2015 Breeders’ Classic, Payne revealed he is hoping the Redoute’s Choice mare will progress into a legitimate Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) prospect.
“She’s pretty forward I think. She’s a big mare so you can never tell but she’s done plenty of work,” he said.
“I’d like to go to the Coolmore later on, that’s her aim if all goes well.”
A proven first-up performer, Lilliburlero charged home to win the Group 3 Triscay Stakes (1200m) upon returning to racing in 2014; progressing to a close second in the Group 3 Roy Higgins Tribute (1200m) and credible performances in each of the Group 3 Sebring Stakes (1200m), Group 2 Sapphire Stakes (1200m) and Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic (1400m).
Placing third in the Group 3 Mumm Stakes (1100m) in her only other start prior to the Starlight Stakes, Lilliburlero is currently rated a generous $13 chance for success in the 2015 Breeders’ Classic with Ladbrokes.com.au.
