Final acceptances for the 2014 Group 2 Breeders’ Cup have been released, with exciting mare Streama highlighting a field of eight competitors for this weekend’s feature at Rosehill.
Despite only a short 2013 Spring campaign, Streama claimed a memorable victory in the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) before narrowly running second to the season’s top-performer Boban in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).
Trainer Guy Walter and Jockey Blake Shinn will be aiming to secure two featured event wins in as many weeks after the pair guided Appearance to victory in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes at Randwick last weekend, and are both confident in a first-up victory to the talented daughter of Stratum.
Launching a two-pronged attack on the 2014 Breeders’ Cup, stablemate Catkins has also been included in the final field by the Walter stables.
Following up 2013 spring victories in the Group 3 Mares Sprint (1200m) and Group 3 Eliza Park International Stakes (1600m), Catkins was unlucky to finish second to Red Tracer in the Group 1 Myer Classic on November 2nd.
Having drawn barrier one, the Dubawi mare’s claims at a first-up win are further boosted by news regular jockey Hugh Bowman has been confirmed to take the ride.
Shaping as the largest threat to Walter stables’ success is White Sage; also included in the final field for the Breeders’ Classic.
Having claimed five wins from as many starts since debuting in May 2013, White Sage was one of last year’s quiet achievers, closing her perfect maiden campaign with victory in the Listed Stanley Dewalt Festival Stakes (1500m) on November 30th.
Never racing at Group level previously, the 2014 Breeders’ Cup will undoubtedly be the Reset mare’s biggest test to date and will need to perform if to justify nominations in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) and Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m) this preparation.
The notable absentee from the 2014 Breeders’ Classic final field is Red Tracer, who was yesterday confirmed by trainer Chris Waller to remain in the paddock for another two weeks before a likely tilt at the Group 2 Millie Fox Quality Stakes (1400m) on March 1st.
Classy Joseph Pride-trained mare Steps In Time, Sharnee Rose, Driefontein, Emmalene and Pretty Pins have also been confirmed as starters in the 2014 Breeders’ Classic.
