The Sydney Autumn Carnival is the highlight racing event in New South Wales, and takes over the State with its series of excellent race days held from February through until the end of April. On the second race day of the carnival, the exciting Group 2 Breeders Classic is held as part of the Challenge Stakes Day at the Royal Randwick racecourse. The 2012 Breeders Classic is scheduled for the 12th of February 2012.

The Challenge Stakes Day is host to a number of great Group 2 and 3 races, and gives punters the first opportunity of the autumn season to bet on more than one quality race; as the first race day of the carnival consists of only the Expressway Stakes. Other events on the day include the Royal Sovereign Stakes, Light Fingers Stakes and the Frederick Clissold Stakes.

A race for mares four-years-old and up at set weights plus penalties, the Breeders Classic is a 1200 metre dash offering $150,000 in prize money. It is an excellent event for quality females returning to racing after a spell, and for reliable sprinters. One of the younger races of the Sydney Carnival the Breeders Classic was first run in 1996 when Destruct won. The race record was set in 2004 by Private Steer when Glenn Boss rode to victory in a time of 1:08.31.
